Polygamy
« on: June 16, 2012, 01:06:37 PM »
Understand god did permitted polygamy. Among other but why do people think its accept able now.

One man one woman - Monogamy   This marriage "type" is what most people are familiar with. Genesis 2:24
One man, many women - Polygamy
Jacob had 2 wives and fathered 13 children. This is rarely spoken about when the subject of marriage and the bible is debated! Genesis 4:19

Levirate - Brother-in-law marriage
If a woman were to become a widow and had not given birth to a son, she would be required to have "relations" with her brother-in-law. Genesis 38:6-10
A man, a woman, and HER property   If a woman was "married" and infertile, she could giver her property, her slave, to her husband as a wife. Genesis 16
A man, one or more wives, and some concubines
A man could have one or more wives and any number of concubines. In modern terms, one man, his wive(s), and one or more mistresses. Genesis 20:10
A soldier and his female captive
As with many wars, women become the property of the victor. And that is how it was in biblical times. Female captives were forced to submit to their male captors, usually by force, RAPE. Deuteronomy 21:11-14 and Numbers 31:1-18
A male rapist and the victim
If a man raped a woman and she wasn't married, she would be forced to marry him. A man could rape any woman that he liked and they would be considered married. The draw back? For the man OF COURSE! He could not divorce her!! Deuteronomy 22:28-29
A male and a female slave
An owner could order a female slave to "marry" a male slave without any input from the female.The consumation of this "union" usually involved rape. Exodus 21:4

Also I heard deut 21 it'snt about rape but on how a man has sex with the woman he is bethrol to.

Technically 1 man + more than 1 woman = polygyny versus 1 woman + more than 1 man = polyandry, both of which are a form of polygamy (1 person with more than 1 spouse).

polus = many
gamos = marriage
gynê, gynaikos = woman/wife
anêr, andros = man/husband

polus + gamos = polygamy = marriage involving more than 2 partners
polus + gynê = polygyny = 1 husband + more than 1 wife (i.e., "many wives")
polus + andros = polyandry = 1 wife + more than 1 husband (i.e., "many husbands")

Yes, but polygamy is used to refer to polygyny as it by far the more common form.

I discuss all these in my teaching on marriage and divorce.  Because these are ancient texts, they are very easy to take out of context and misunderstand.
My translation of Eph 5:21-22 ... mutually submitting in the fear of Messiah; wives (mutually submitting) to your husbands as to the Lord.

Personally I believe that polygamy was the result of the fall. If one does a careful reading of Genesis 1-3, one can find some interesting things. Mane did not ruke over woman in any way until it was pronounced that he would, by God after they had sinned. This is part of the Genesis 3:16 pronouncement.

Genesis 3:16

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
KJV

So the woman will have more sorrow, and she will have more pregnancies. This right here sets the premise for possible polygamy because sorrow comes with pregnancy, and she will have more pregnancies. Now it might mean that the pregnancy duration will be longer, but that still makes for a situation where the polygamy would actually lessen the sorrow and the pregnancies for each woman.

Now, it also says that man will now rule over woman. This means that he is now her boss. It also means that this is different from how it was before.

So basically, polygamy was a natural progression from this fallen state of things. Obviously when Christ came He came to restore relationships to their original purpose. Have you ever noticed that polygamy isn't really spoken of in the New Testament?
